How do I take care of my furniture?
All varnished outdoor Moon Valley products should be lightly sanded and re-finished after the first season, depending on the extent of exposure to the elements. After that, a once-a-year treatment will do the trick. Moon Valley supplies varnish and instructions for care to add to your convenience. If your furniture is unfinished, you can stain it or treat it with a water sealer, if you prefer. It can also be left untreated and will turn a silvery-gray over time.
How is it constructed?
Our picnic tables and lawn furniture are all handcrafted with the finest quality cedar logs and Ponderosa Pine lumber. It is bolted together with heavy-duty hardware and heavily braced using truss-type leg assemblies for greater strength and stability. All edges are rounded and sanded for greater safety and comfort, and seats are contoured with our secret technique in order to meet our goal - overall beauty and comfort of our furniture.
How long will it last?
Cedar is one of the longest lasting woods available for outdoor use. Our sturdy doweled construction combined with weather resistant cedar wood makes our furniture a lasting investment to treasure for a lifetime.
What about cracks in the cedar?
All of our hand-crafted furniture is built with pride by our skilled craftsmen. You may notice a range of natural occurrences in the wood which can be identified as small slit-like cracks to larger/richer cracks that run the length of the log to the heart of the wood. Take notice each log is unique in color and size of the checking. It is normal, natural and necessary for all cedar log furniture to endure the natural process of “checking” as the wood ages. Checking occurs as a cedar log releases moisture across or through the annual growth rings as it dries or “seasons”. It does not affect the structural performance or integrity of the furniture, and enhances the natural beauty of the piece. Due to the normal nature of checking that in no way affects the integrity of the wood or strength of the furniture, we are not able to accept returns or replacements without a shipping charge or possibility of a restocking fee. Of course, all of our furniture is warranted against workmanship and defects. In other words, don’t be alarmed if you see cracks in your cedar furniture.
What Can I Do With My Unfinished Product Kit?
Now that unfinished Moon Valley product kits are in retail stores across the U.S. and Canada, we'd like to give our valued customers some ideas as to how to protect and beautify their newly-purchased items.
Upon assembling your product kit, keep these ideas in mind...
Sanding Your Product – All Moon Valley kit products are pre-sanded before shipping. However, each customer has a different preference as to the level of smoothness for their product. If you want to do a quick touch-up on any part of your product, use a fine grit sandpaper (120-grit or 180-grit) to reach your desired level of smoothness.
Leaving it Unfinished - You're in luck because Moon Valley products are made from white cedar. Cedar is naturally more resistant to weather decay and insect damage than other types of wood, so you can simply leave it as is. Over time, it will turn a silvery-gray color which gives it a rustic, aged look.
Finishing Your Product - There are a few options for finishing your product. Some suggestions are staining, painting, or applying a varnish. But before you undertake any of these option, please reference the following guidelines...
