It keeps large birds (and squirrels) out. However, if you are fitting these on feeders that are already squirrel-proof (through a weight-activated spring), they don't work as it keeps the feeder hole in a closed position.
I love this, but I still have problems with it. My feeder would not attach to the cage. Because the squirrels are terrible, I have now turned the cage upside down to let the seeds fall on the ground rather than the bottom of the cage. I am still trying out different ways to attach the bottom (which is now the top), to the cage. But, the small birds love it. The large birds still try every morning to get in and they can get their heads in, but it is too much effort, so they do give up quickly. I highly recommend this, but you may need to be creative to make it work with the feeder you have.
I just put up the new 13" cage for the feeder the squirrels love! It fits the unusual feeder shape perfectly using ties and a rubber stopper with a drilled hole.
Within a minute, a Titmouse explored and climbed right in, with another waiting on the branch, see pics. More birds joined quickly.
Within half an hour, a squirrel was eyeing it in confusion and possibly frustration. Quarrelsome Jays are looking elsewhere.
Thanks for making such a durable, effective cage.
The feeder cage shipped quickly and arrived intact. The provided attachment adapters didn't work with my feeder, so I wired them together. The cage excludes cowbirds, unlike my caged Audubon feeder, where skinny female cowbirds can slip in.
Quality construction. Allows all the the small birds to feed, such as gold finches and keeps the large birds out. We don’t have a squirrel problem so I can’t say for sure, but I think it would keep them out. Female bluebird went in and out easily. One cardinal went in and back out but it was a struggle. It pays for itself in seed saved from the grackles, red winged blackbirds, blue jays, mockingbirds, and other big birds not being able to devour all the seed.
